Need For Tooth Extractions ?

Everyone likes to smile with their own natural teeth, no-one wants to pull it off. But in some instances the tooth extractions (or) Oral surgery Treatment are the only treatment option that has to be done... These scenarios include:

What Happens After Tooth Extractions ?

After the extraction of teeth, a blood clot will be formed at the site which promotes the healing of the extracted site. If the blood clot dislodges or breaks, dry socket will be formed. Not only it affects the healing process, but also cause bad breath and pain.

Steps To Be Taken Prior To Extraction?

Your dentist will make sure to stabilize your systemic condition before undergoing any extractions and if needed a course of antibiotic therapy will be prescribed prior to extraction procedure. The period of antibiotic therapy varies depending upon the severity of the systemic disease usually ranges from 3-5 days or sometimes even a week.

After Care Instructions...

  • Once the procedure gets completed, the dentist will place the gauze pad over the extracted site, bite down to reduce bleeding and to aid in clot formation. Leave the gauze on for 10-20 minutes or until the pad is soaked with blood.
  • Apply an ice pack to your cheek directly after the procedure to reduce swelling.
  • Take medications as prescribed by your dentist.
  • Avoid immediate strenuous activities following extraction
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol till the socket heals out completely.
  • Don’t rinse for 24 hours after the tooth extraction, and avoid vigorous spiting or mouth opening.
  • Use pillows to prop your head up when you lie down.
  • Brush and floss your teeth like normal, but avoid the extraction site.
  • Follow soft diet and avoid spicy and hot food stuffs.

How Long Does It Take For The Extracted Socket To Get Healed ?

The healing process depends on the patient’s immunity and the systemic conditions of the patients. For a young healthy patient if may take upto 3-5 days ,whereas for an middle aged or older age group with underlying deliberate systemic conditions it can vary from a week may extend upto two weeks.

Should I Need To Replace The Extracted Site With Artificial Ones ?

It is essential to replace the missing tooth with crowns, bridges or implants, after complete healing because teeth has the tendency to drift into the nearest available spaces. It is really necessary to keep the tooth intact in its original positions.

How Does Wisdom Tooth Extraction Differ From Normal Extraction ?

Once it has been identified that a wisdom tooth is problematic and needs to be removed; local anaesthesia is administered so that the tooth can be pulled out without any major discomfort. A minor oral surgery is then performed. The tissue around the teeth is incised and the bone around the wisdom tooth are removed so that the tooth can be cleanly extracted from the socket.
